This week's challenge is "Ye Olde Watering Hole," which was suggested by Maryanne of Inside the Gilded Cage.
For this challenge I chose to dig up photos of famous pubs:
This is the Spaniards Inn, just off of Hampstead Heath in London. Notice that it sits quite close to the road. Just outside of this shot is a place where the road narrows and only one car can get through at a time. A toll house used to sit there. The infamous highwayman Dick Turpin used to sit in the upper room just to the right of the sign. There he would watch the coaches as the approached the toll booth with an eye out for likely targets.
Down the road is Jack Straw's Castle. Unfortunately, this building only dates to 1964, but a pub has stood there since the early 1700s.
The Sherlock Holmes pub has been around for nearly half a century. It stands on the site of the former Northumberland pub. This is mildly interesting to Sherlockians because Watson served in the Fifth Northumberland Fusiliers, a regiment that still exists today. The Sherlock Holmes has a web site that is worth a visit.
This is the famous Hofbrauhaus in Munich. This is a popular place for tourists and locals alike as evidenced by their web site. Fortunately for us, it was within walking dstance of our hotel!
Finally, this is Fitzgerald's, famous from the BBC series Ballykissangel. The show ran from 1996-2001. The filming location of the series was in Avoca, a small town in County Wicklow with is just as famous as the location of the oldest continuously-operating handweavers in Ireland. It's also not far from poet Thomas Moore's "Meeting of the Waters." Be sure to click on the link for a 1999 interview with a young actor on the series named Col Farrell.
I'm up late, so I'll be posting since it's past midnight where I live. For the entire linking list please click here. I don't know if I'll have the time to incorporate it later today, but I'll give it a shot.
As always, you can click on any of the pictures for a larger version. Thanks for visiting!
