I finally broke down and replaced the motherboard today. The IDE issues continued to go to you-know-where in a handbasket, so it was either this or buy an external DVD unit. This was just as cheap but I'll be much better off in the end. The new motherboard has some newer features, plus better support for Vista. Can't argue with that.
So far everything is working. I'm re-installing SQL server. Need to re-install Outlook next so I'll have e-mail back.
Looks like Thursday will be spent getting software and a development/writing/photography environment back in order.
