Making sure this doesn't happen to you

Alex Eckleberry at Sunbelt Blog talks about The Julie Project (no relation), which was started in the wake of the Julie Amero case. Amero as you may recall, was the teacher who was convicted of exposing porn to her students after a malware-infected computer began spewing pop-ups.

This post about a 16 year-old kid who was in a similar situation is scary indeed. Click on the wrong site, open the wrong e-mail, and YOUR computer could be serving up kiddie porn without your knowledge. The author tells how it nearly happened to his kid, even with a locked-down home network and security measures in place. I saw it happen last year during the time between when the WMF exploit became known and a patch was available. People would just open a web page or an e-mail and get infected with all sorts of crap.

Not only is it important to keep up with security on your own system, but it's essential that you speak up against these travesties of justice. The next case could be your own.
