What sort of fees should you pay a literary agent?

Victoria Strauss of Writer Beware shares some thoughts over at Absolute Write.

The big red flag still remains: beware of agencies that charge fees upfront. If an agent tells you that you need to pay a set fee per year (or month, or whatever) to cover expenses, then they're probably not the agent for you. Why do the legwork to submit manuscripts if you can just rake in fees?

I got an email from WD/WM this week with the subject line, "You could be a published author for the price of one cup of coffee." I almost deleted it as a violation of Yog's Law. Turns out it was an ad for a Writer's Market Online subscription. Now I just have to decide whether it offers anything I can't do myself, almost as easily.
