Sprint started pushing updates of Froyo (Android 2.2) to Epic customers today. Only a couple of months late. Thanks, Sprint. Hey, this is faster than they got WinMo 6.5 out for the Touch Pro 2.
I finally bit the bullet and put a pre-release (okay, leaked) Froyo on my Epic the other day. Today I downloaded the new update and applied it...and the GPS failed to get a lock. Darned good thing I'm conversant with doing these things. I had to reapply the last version of the stock ROM, re-root the phone, and then apply the update AGAIN. Of course, it wasn't that simple. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth involved, and I missed watching most of the Cowboys game. I did make it for OT, though.
The one big thing I was hoping for was support for Kies, the Samsung app that allows an Epic to sync data with Outlook. That doesn't seem to work so far. However, I have a Kies update downloading, so there's the ever-so-slight chance that it might all work.
Oh, who am I kidding?
I knew the job was dangerous when I jumped the WinMo ship and went to Android.
So, how's Froyo? The phone is much faster, though I'm seeing some lag on switching between portrait and landscape modes. Too early to tell on battery life. One thing from the WinMo world seems to hold true here as well. When applying a new ROM, expect battery life to go out the window for a few days. I don't know exactly why that is, but I've learned never to complain about battery life (or praise it, for that matter) until I've had a Rom for at least a week.
Oh, yes. I have also discovered Angry Birds. Be afraid.
Ah. Kies has updated and restarted. I have a "connecting..." animation going on. I don't think it's going to work because the new ROM doesn't have Kies as an option on the menu that pops up when the phone is connected to a computer. Ah, well. I gave it a shot. It's not the end of the world.
But I have Froyo now. Just in time for the (rumored) announcement of Gingerbread!
If you plan to update and have a stock ROM, please install something like Titanium Backup, which will back up all of your apps and data. If you're rooted and have Clockworx installed, also use their backup as their restore will pretty much put everything back to where you had been before in terms of apps and screen layout and the like. It's pretty handy, and is one of the reasons I root my phone. I like having a a decent backup/restore option.
If you have an Epic, watch for the Froyo update. It should hit your phone soon.
