Via Dear Author: John Mayer 2011 Clinic - "Manage the Temptation to Publish Yourself." Yes, Mayer is a musician, but his advice rings so true:
This time is a really important time for you guys because nobody knows who you are, and nobody should. This is not a time to promote yourself. It doesn’t matter. This is the time to get your stuff together. Promotion can be like that. You can have promotion in 30 seconds if your stuff is good. Good music is its own promotion.
You can swap "music" out for "writing" in almost every instance in this article and find some gems. 

How to Undress a Victorian - A WSJ article (check out the video and slides) about a seminar at RWA to teach writers about the many layers of garments that a well-dressed Victorian woman had to wear. When he ripped her bodice, he was likely to find more layers of clothing along with a fairly immovable corset.
