Social Networking Policies

Fresh when it gets here from Julie Barrett

I'm not a cool kid, but I do hang out on some of the social networking sites. The problem is, I get hit with spam and app requests constantly. It's not that I'm mean in ignoring app requests, event requests, and so on, it's just that it got to the point where I prefer not to share every little thing I do with the world. Honestly, do you want to know what articles I'm reading, what games I'm playing, and so on? I just dislike the idea of contributing to information overload.

And let's face it, when I add an event to my calendar, should I spam my entire friends list with invites to the same event? If you're in the UK the chances are pretty slim that you'll be joining me for a meeting of our local SF club. Why should I clutter up your feed with that?

On the other hand, I enjoy connecting with my friends via various social networking sites. You shouldn't have to send me an app request on Facebook to connect with me on another site. In fact, don't. Please. It seems when I install those apps it wants to report everything I do on the other social networking site back to Facebook or Twitter, or wherever. See above.

So how do you find me? I've put together a handy-dandy list of social networking siteswhere I hang out the most. It's linked on the sidebar, too.

I only ask that if I don't know you well, please drop me a line as part of the request. Send me a tweet, leave a comment on a blog post, whatever. If you hang out on social networks, Twitter in particular, you know the ratio of spam to good stuff is pretty high. I just don't want people I know (even if we've just met at a convention) to get lost in the shuffle. And if you do know me well and I don't follow back, please drop me a note. Your request might have been lost in the aforementioned shuffle.

I hope that explains things and makes it easier for people to find me. I also hope it avoids hurt feelings.

Please leave a comment if you have any questions.
