The Clothing Cusp

Yesterday, Gail Carriger posted 10 Convention Commandments. While these are aimed mostly at writers and others making personal appearances at conventions, she has some good advice.

Rule 10 is Thou shalt not dress like a slob, and she links to an earlier entry where she talks about how one should dress.

Gail has a point, but I have a problem. I'm on the Clothing Cusp. (Sounds like a Jeffism from Coupling, doesn't it?) This is mostly a good thing, but it does present a dilemma. For both of you who follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you'll notice I've been out walking lately. I've only lost a few pounds, but I find that I am dropping body fat. I have a Fitbit and am on the slow weight loss plan, on the theory that these pounds didn't go on overnight, and perhaps if I take my time in shedding them, they'll be more likely to stay off.

When I started this plan, I was barely fitting into most of my clothes. Now they're really loose, but only a few items the next size down really fit well. (I'm wearing such an outfit right now.)

Hence the Clothing Cusp.

I'm not inclined to take in my jeans. That seems like too much work for what I paid for them. I've bought one more pair of shorts, but for everything else, I'm just tightening the belt another notch.

I probably look like a sack of potatoes in some of my clothes right now. I've done two conventions in the past month, and I had to wonder if people thought my clothes looked really bad on me, though I did take the items that fit me the best.

All in all, it's a good problem to have. It means I'm working in the right direction towards my weight loss goal. When I did South Beach, the pounds came off so fast that I was able to buy a bunch of new clothes at once. It was nice, but it hurt the wallet.

I did go shopping yesterday for new clothes, and ended up with a pair of shorts and a nice top. The top is flattering, and it's a smaller size. And of course, some of my clothing that has shrunk in the laundry fits better. That's a nice benefit.

So if you see me in the next few weeks and I look a tad on the frumpy side you'll know why. And it's a good thing.

Enjoy your weekend!
