The whole groundhog thing never made a lick of sense to me, because six weeks from 2/2 is still before March 21st! Of course it's gonna still be winter! And in Manlius, wintery conditions usually run well into April. On the writing vs. publication, it seems to me that self-published books don't count for much unless people want to buy and read them. John managed to earn a living for a few years on self-published non-fiction. That follows the "money flows to the author" rule. But most self-published books are true vanity publications that will never make their money back. People have suggested to me many times that I publish the Mavarin stuff myself. Nope: beyond the online teaser stuff, it ain't gonna happen. The only way more than a handful of people are ever gonna read a few hundred pages (or more) about Rani and friends is when some "real" publisher offers me a contract. K.

Good for you!

Gosh, I hope you didn't think I was lumping John (and people like him) in with the vanity ilk. The ones who do well understand that it's a money-making business and know what it takes to produce, promote, and sell something that people want to buy. That's the opposite of someone who pins their hopes and dreams on a dollar advance and virtual shelf space at Amazon. Apologies if you took that the wrong way.
