Bimini, The Bahamas, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Just as we were leaving the stateroom to disembark, the ship's alarm sounded. Uh, what? There had been a couple of announcements about half an hour earlier, but we didn't hear them in the room. Turns out it was a crew drill. Nothing to see here, except crew in life jackets. Move along.
We went to the shuttle at the end of the pier. Of course, there was a huge crowd of people waiting their turn. But wait! We could walk it and be there in five minutes! Why not? Oops. That was just to the end of the pier. It was another long walk to the Beach Club. Paul tracked our walk on Google Maps later. It was 1.35 miles. Not that much in the grand scheme of things, but parts of it involved narrow, curvy roads with no sidewalk.
We'd booked the day at The Beach Club at Bimini, which is owned by Virgin. Since we were the only ship there, the beach wasn't as crowded as it could have been. But there were still all the beautiful people staying at the resort. We grabbed our welcome drink and headed to the restaurant for lunch. $100 later, it was time to go hang out at the beach.
We got decent chairs! Under an umbrella! We chilled for a while, took a dip in the sea, then headed to the pool for a bit. We didn't swim, though. Still, we could get used to this. The sun, the palm trees, the blue seas and white beaches. Lovely.
Sadly, it was time to go, and we got smart and grabbed a shuttle back to the ship.
A word about embarkation/disembarkation at port. We scan our cruise card, and the security crew member compares our faces to the pictures taken during initial embarkation. There's a bit of security theatere involved. Always the metal detectors and scanners. It's generally pretty fast, and there's a cold water station ourside on the dock.
The water was nice, but it was time for a proper drink at the Passport Bar. By then it was time for a nap. We had a final dinner in the main dining room, then it was off for the last show of the voyage. It was called "Broken Strings." Again, great cast energy. Those people work their tails off for those shows.
All packed and ready to disembark.
Disembarkation was a madhouse. It was fairly smooth until we got out of Customs. Even at Customs they just look at your embarkation picture. Outside was another story. We'd called for a Lyft, and it took the driver forever to get there. Not his fault. The traffic was just that bad, and there was a crush of people. We did make it to the airport in time for our return flight. We won't say it was close, but we didn't have to wait very long for boarding. Just enough time for a comfort break.
All in all, it was a fun vacation. Will we cruise again? Perhaps. It's a bit too early to think about that.
