Ah, I should show a picture of the whole plant. The stalk goes bare just below those leaves. I'm amazed the thing has held out through this summer. Now there are some years I manage several batches of pesto from my basil, but this year I've been very lucky to harvest a few leaves for cooking. Sigh.
