One of my current projects is to duplicate my pictures on Zooomr to Flickr and vice-versa. Why? The main reason is that I don't want all my pictures in one place. Or even worse, to have one service go down and lose part of my pictures. (Yes, I have everything locally, plus backups. It's just standard paranoia.)
Another reason is that I'm tired of waiting on the Zooomr API. You know, it would figure that once I get all this done the API will go out the door. I asked for a key back in November, and as far as I know they haven't been distributed. I found a very nifty Silverlight photo display application that will work with my Flickr sets, so I'm going to go with what I know works. (At least in terms of the API. The Silverlight app is a demo and they keep improving it, but it just looks way cool. Shiny. Must try.)
Once the project is finished and I get more space and bandwidth I may host more pictures locally. We'll see how it goes. At the present time I'm not keen on putting ads on my site. And let's face it: I don't get the kind of traffic that is needed to generate much in the way of revenue. Even if I did have traffic, I'd be blocking ads from some of the big buyers - the vanity presses, shady agents, photo gear sellers with a bad reputation. There wouldn't be many ads left to run, I suspect.
But I digress.
My other big project is to tag pictures. I've learned so far that I shoot a lot of pictures of flowers and cats - mostly stuff around the house. The clear lesson is that I need to get away more often to shoot. A big reason for sticking so close to home in the last year has been deadlines and family issues. I feel less guilty about slighting family and work when I just pop out the door to shoot. This must change.
I also want to do more closeup and macro pictures. These can be done at home - with the low guilt factor. My recent success with laser photography makes me keen to try more. Paul's into lasers, and this is another thing we can do together.
In addition, I'm going to try Trevor Carpenter's 2008 Challenge, and try to participate in the Round Robin Photo Challenges more. And yes, I want to do Feline Friday more often, even though it means more cat pictures. Abby insists upon this.
But first, back to tagging and moving pictures.
