Just a few bullet points to help you along:
- Self publishing is a business.
- If you simply build it, they will NOT come.
- Hits to your web site do NOT equal sales.
- No, it is NOT okay to spend a small fortune on bookmarks and giveaway items and nothing on your web site. See the first bullet point.
- There's nothing wrong with getting the most bang for your buck. Some of the best promotional ideas/items I've seen were put together in response to a tight budget. Conversely, you can't just spend no money (or time) and expect the sales to come rolling in. Again, see the first bullet point.
- Promoting yourself and your work is part of the job, but do not fall for the "any publicity - even bad - is good publicity" trap. I have only purchased one book from an annoying self-promoter. And that was to help the publisher out. Yes, this means spending the time and effort to learn techniques that work - and those that fail so you don't fall into those traps. Back to point the first again.
- Did I mention that self-publishing is a business?
- Lather, rinse, repeat.
