Hey, Look! A Story Publication!
Well, this has been on Amazon for a while, but since the press release has hit the virtual street I guess I can officially announce that I will have a story in The Further Crossovers of Sherlock Holmes&n...

Publishing Myths Series, Updated
About once a year I try to go back and update my Publishing Myths series. I'm kind of surprised at how well things have held up since 2009. (2011 update) (2014 update)
I've gone through and added a few updates plus rechecked and updated broken links.
There are some major trends I've noticed in the last few years: <...

Publishing Myths Series Revisited (Again)
Way back in 2009, I wrote a series of blog posts on publishing myths, with a quick update in 2011.
Changes in the industry have rendered some of my information out of date, but I'm leaving it up for archival purposes.
The biggest news since then is the continued rise of ebooks and self-publishing. We've also se...

Writing Credits, Professional And Otherwise
I'm facing a deadline so this may be a tad disjointed. I wanted to get this down on the journal and will probably revisit this in the next couple of weeks. Comments are welcome, though. I also have a question at the end.
A friend and I have been discussing exactly what would be a professional publishing credit. With the caveat that your mileage may vary, here's how I define it:
You submit a work to a third party. It gets accepted, goes through an editi...

Dear Author Looking For Editing Services...
The Editorial Freelancers Association recently released their guide to common editorial rates. This is what you should be paying an editor to review and correct your work.
Want basic copyediting for your 100,000 word tome? A fast copyeditor using the lowest rate should charge you $1200, if I've got the math right. (That would be about 400 pages at 10 pages an hour, at $30 an hour) I've had people tell me $300 is too much for b...

Today's Self-Promotion Fail
I was reading the comments on an editorial at our local paper (not going to link), and among the "usual suspects" comments on either side of the issue (which is why I'm not going to link. It's depressing) was a post suggesting a book. The post read like jacket copy, and failed to mention the author. I went to check it out. The author of the post and the author of the book are one and the same.
But of course.
Hey, it may be a good book. But that sort of...

New Terms For Random House Digital Imprints
Over at Writer Beware, Victoria Strauss has the details on Random House's new terms for their digital imprints. They now offer a more "traditional" contract with an advance plus royalty as well as their "profit sharing" deal.
I'm still not enamored of some of the terms, but at least they have a stated sales level to trigger reversion of rights at the request of the author. <...

Writer On The Bottom
I'm on a deadline, dashing this out while the morning caffeine sets in. This week has brought one piece of bad news after another for people trying to make a living (or at least a pittance) by their words.

Class Action Suit Against Publisher Dismissed
I can't believe I didn't blog about this earlier. Oh yes, I know why. I was busy prepping for two back-to-back conventions. Back in June, a class action suit was filed against PublishAmerica.
The suit was dismissed about a month ago. Victoria Strauss has some good analysis of the decision and what it means for PA authors and authors in general.
Bottom line: Alwa...

On Choosing A Publisher
Recently, conversation on a writing board I frequent turned to choosing a publisher. How do you choose a publisher?
Well, you don't choose a publisher. A publisher chooses to publish your manuscript.
If you're self-publishing, you may choose from a number of services.
One fundamental difference is in who holds the rights to publish your book.
If your'e self-publishing, you hold the rig...
