Latest Twitter Spam Tactic: Retweets

Fresh when it gets here from Julie Barrett
Monday, May 2, 2011

Normally I'm flattered when someone takes the time to retweet a post of mine. Imagine my puzzlement at retweet of a post recounting several terribly mundane things I'd done during the day. It wasn't witty. It was missing punctuation. Yes, it was late when I made the tweet.

Being the curious sort, I clicked on the profile and discovered it was all retweets, and most from writers. Hmmm. Her profile invited bloggers to join her at her site. Which linked to ...

OMG. That web site that's been spamming writers on Twitter forever. I won't name them, but will link to Writer Beware's post about them. They don't need more linkjuice from me.

I blocked and reported for spam. THEN discovered that profile had followed me on Twitter. Yeesh.

These folks have also sent out retweets purporting to be me tweeting "Writers Wanted" along with the URL.

This is why you should take the time to check the profiles of people who are following you and block any that look bogus or appear to be spamming.

Oh, look. I just got another follow notice from a possibly bonus account. Here we go again...
