The season of giving - some Christmas songs a rest. Please.

Karen wrote about Christmas novelty songs today as part of John Scalzi's Weekend Assignment to name the one novelty Christmas song that should be expunged from the planet.

It got me to thinking about other holiday songs that simply drive me up the wall - mostly from overplay, I suppose. Number one on the anti-hit list for 2006 is It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It is NOT wonderful when you hear that song 8676543 times in a single hour at the mall.

There's another song that sort of creeps me out. I love Judy Garland. But Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas sounds more like a command than a wish. "Have yourself a merry little Christmas. NOW, dammit!"

And what says "Christmas" more than a bunch of Chipmunks singing? Okay, I have to admit that I sort of liked that song - until the creepy guy on Boston Legal sang it a couple of weeks ago. *shudder*

I was at Target the other day trying to look for props for the Catmas card (yes, I'm working on it) but they had a kiosk for Christmas music playing the same two songs over and over.

I really don't mean to sound like a Grinch. I like Christmas music - just not the same songs played over and over again. Some of this may stem from my time in retail. I worked at a home electronics store, and they were pushing a couple of Christmas albums. We were required to have one of them playing at all times. I was putting in 60-hour weeks around the holidays. To this day I still get an involuntary twitch when I hear certain Christmas songs.

So there ya go. Do enjoy your Christmas.

Now, dammit.

The Christmas songs that sound like Betty Boop is singing grate my nerves horribly. My favorite song this year is my 5 year old singing "Fleece, not a lot".(Feliz Navidad) I should correct him, but it is soo dang cute.

Now I've got Andy Williams' The Most Wonderful Time of the Year in my head. Thanks for that. (Actually I kind of like it.) And we play the Chipmunks Christmas LPs every Crhistmas morning. But yes, endless repetition of the same few songs is a Bad Thing.
