I decided - just as an experiment - to pick up a book in a series I'd never read before. Just to make it interesting I decided not to start with book one. (No, this isn't a Harry Potter book.) The object was to see how the author handled characters and explained relevant events.
It certainly forced me to read with a critical eye. To be honest, I found that I cared a lot more about the supporting characters than I did for the protagonist. Would it make a difference if I were to start from the first? I'm not sure. I can say that being not being totally wrapped up in the book meant that I was able to pay more attention to mechanics. That was quite worthwhile in that regard.
