I suppose this is what I get for not paying for expedited shipping

Yes, I'm anxious for my new camera body to arrive. One reason I chose the seller on Amazon was because of all the happy campers who got their packages sooner than expected.

I ordered the camera Thursday afternoon.

Sunday I got a note that it had shipped. Once it got in the UPS system I found that it didn't even get to the UPS facility until 24 hours after I got notice. So what took so long? I suppose a driver actually picked it up sometime during the day Monday and it took that long to get to their facility. Okay, I can understand that.

So why has my package been sitting half an hour away from my house since 4:21 this morning? This isn't the first time this has happened. It used to be that a package would arrive at that hour and I'd have it before the day was out. I'm talking standard ground shipping, not 2nd Day Air. The package has had two "destination scans," one early in the afternoon and one early in the evening.

Since the package is being shipped ground, I suppose they're under no obligation to get it to me quickly. Their computer says arrival is estimated for tomorrow, and by golly they're going to stick to it. Whatever happened to putting a package on the next truck out? Or is there that much of a backlog?

I know, I know: I'm probably just overly anxious for the camera. But it didn't used to be this way. Given what I paid to ship this thing I don't think I'm out of line to expect prompt shipment and delivery. And insurance. If this body gets dumped on my porch (now there's an image) without so much as a request for a signature, I'll be upset. I've had packages swiped before. Of course, I'm willing to go stand in line somewhere or wait a day if delivery was attempted while I was out. When I weigh the inconvenience against the risk of theft, I choose the former.

Nothing would please me more than to see the smiling UPS driver on my doorstep early tomorrow, electronic clipboard in one hand, my package in the other.

I am not holding my breath.
