Fresh when it gets here from

A
strange and sometimes difficult year is drawing to a close. Tell us
about something that happened this year that was a pleasant surprise
for you personally.
Wow, this is a tough one, because it's
been a difficult couple of years for me personally and professionally.
Freelancers are always the first to get cut when the economy goes down.
I've had a couple of health issues to deal with. Paul's job is going
well, and that's a good thing. But we're talking about me, personally.
So, what was pleasant? Selling a story to a major mystery anthology certainly was. I was also pleased to be invited to The Leap Back 2009.
I'm
sure the recent drop in gas prices has pleased a lot of people. Since
we were already fairly frugal about driving (I have no commute, and
Paul and Chris have short drives. Chris took a web-based class this
semester to avoid some driving) we had to find other ways to deal with
rising gas prices. The recent price drops have been a boon to the
budget.
Generally, I'm pleased by the little things these days.
Stuff like finding food and clothing I have to buy anyway at a deep
discount. Sleeping through the night. Seeing someone on the road who doesn't
drive like a jerk. Getting a bunch of faves on one of my photos. It's
those little things that make the big, bad things easier to cope with.
Extra Credit: Are you looking forward to the new year?
Mostly.
I have several conventions (including the one mentioned above) booked.
I'm seeing a few hopeful signs that there may be more work coming my
way. I'm working on a few small writing projects. We'll see what
happens with those. But right now I'm not going to get terribly
optimistic. It'll be easier to deal with disappointment.
