A Bit of A Disturbing Self-Promotional Trend
(I've held off on this for a few days because frankly, it may be a bit ranty, and the heat isn't helping.)
A trend I've noticed lately is authors (and sometimes musicians) doing their PR in a "persona." You've settled on Godfrey von Goggles as a pen name, and by golly, you're going to create a Godfrey von Goggles character and share him with the world in hopes it will sell books. Sometimes that works. But there's a line that you want to consider crossing with care. <...

Psst! Wanna Buy Some Pictures?
Imagekind, where I'm selling some photos, is offering $10 off orders or $50 or more through January 1. The code is NewYears10.
Here's my gallery.
And that's my last bit of shameless self-promotion for the year! ...

How to Schmooze at a Convention
Mary Robinette Kowal has a blog post reprinted at the SFWA site: "Conventions and writing, or Schmoozing 101."
There's a fine art to schmoozing, and she's got the balance right.

More Promotional Fail
This morning I woke up to not one, but two promotional e-mails from the same entity - to two different e-mail addresses.
This appears to be another misguided case of, "I'll just write everyone in my address book and apologize if they complain." Sorry, but that's not the way it works. Folks, this is basic e-mail etiquette.
Yes, I'm happy when I get published, but I don't spam my entire address list every time I have an announcement. That's why I have a blog, and that's why you sho...

Just Got A Call Offering To Promote My Book
...that's been out of print for a decade.
I was working on a book outline and the phone rang. I almost let it go because there was no Caller ID info, but since my train of thought was broken, I was ready to unleash my wrath on some hapless phone solicitor.
Caller: Jody?
Me: You've got the wrong number.
Caller: Jody Bah-rret? Are you the Jody Bah-rret who wrote Quantum Leap A-Z? (I should mention at this point that the connection was static-filled and the ...

More on Self-Promotion Gone Bad
(Note: Please see the update at the bottom.)
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned getting some spam from a self-published author. Victoria Strauss wrote about this phenomenon over at Writer Beware Blogs the other day, and I have to say she is absolutely right.
Spam is rude. It's annoying. And it may be against the law.
Oh, the purveyors...

How NOT to Promote Yourself
A couple of months back I wrote a post called "When Does Self-Promotion Go Overboard?" I didn't get terribly specific other than to say not to emulate bad behavior that drives you up the wall.
I was reminded of that post last night when I got a piece of spam from a self-published author. I'll refrain from naming names and genre, but I will say that the names appeared to have been scraped from a popular web site, and that they were ALL pasted in t...

When Does Self-Promotion Go Overboard?
Rat 'cheer, you may say.
I've been meaning to write about this topic for a long time. The reason
I haven't has less to do with my mad procrastination skills than with a
simple fact:
I'm guilty as hell of doing this myself.
Truth be told, most of us have been guilty at some point. When
you sign that contract, when the check comes in the mail (and clears!),
when that book hits the shelf, when your work gets...
