As a Catholic School lifer and now parent of Catholic School students, giving up something for Lent is an annual tradition.  The most difficult thing I ever gave up was beer about 5 years ago.  By day 25 it seemed that every other commercial on the radio, on television and every other billboard on the road was for Beer.  Beer - beer - everywhere!  This year I've given up desserts, my 6 year old has given up candy, my wife ice cream and my 13 year old opted out (he says he was given dispensation by his teacher) and says a rosary every week instead.   I will admit that since I am watching my weight my sacrifice is fairly self serving, but I forsee dreams of cheesecake in my near future...
