The Eleventh Doctor

Fresh when it gets here from Julie Barrett

So the BBC announced the identity of the Eleventh Doctor today. His name is Matt Smith, and he's not very well known. I have seen him in the Sally Lockhart mysteries, with Billie Piper. But the first pictures I found of him looked all brooding and emo. Sort of like Peter Petrelli does The Doctor. *shudder*

The YouTube intervew give me a little bit of a better feeling about him.

I'm going to go out on a limb and trust Steven Moffat on this one. He's not steered me wrong yet.

I was a big fan of Moffat's writing with the first episode of "Coupling." Anyone who can use the line, "one swallow does not a summer make" in that context gets my attention. And yes, he got it in a good way. Then I saw the "Comic Relief" special "Dr Who and the Curse of the Fatal Death," and knew then and there that Moffat just had to write for the show it ever was resurrected. And so it came to pass, as it were.

And yet, I'm not going to go all total fangirl. I reserve the right to be critical about Matt Smith's performance. He's the youngest actor ever cast in the role. I don't think age (or youth) is a problem with that role, as long as the actor exhibits the right kind of energy. By energy I don't mean a totally manic performance. The Doctor is very old, but whatever his incarnation, he's never lost his exhuberance. That's hard to bottle, and I hope this kid does it.

Kid. He's half my age.

Ouch.

He does have the quirky look I think the Dr should have. David T. was just too pretty. I did like his performance as the Dr, though. I think Matt will look ok when they cut some of his hair off.
As for his performance, I can't remember who said it -but they said they KNEW when he auditioned he was IT. It may have been in the BBC release. So, yeah. Moffatt has written some of my favorite eps, so I will trust him.
Saw the Xmas special. I know a lot of people didn't like it, but I did. Anyone know when it will be on in the States?

Yes, the man definitely needs to have his hair styled differently. But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that one. He could have it that way for a part he's playing now.

Oh, yes. I'll give Moffat the chance to do something with this guy. I love his writing, and I suspect he has some interesting ideas in regard to Dr Who.

I do notice that Matt Smith has a pretty fair number of theater credits, as did David Tennant. I think that's a plus. The Doctor is a larger than life character. I keep thinking about how Jeremy Brett did Sherlock Holmes in the more Victorian theatrical mode. There's something to that in portraying The Doctor, methinks.

Yeah, I guess I'll trust Moffat for now. But I wish he'd ditch the ugly haircut ;)
