Monday Mumblings Preps for Election Day
One thing I don't mention in my online bio is that I was once news director for a local radio station. This means that yes, I've covered elections and I even got to cover a national political convention once. That was kinda cool.
Anyway, it's generally been my tradition since to stay up late and until a winner is called. Obviously, I tried to get some sleep in 2020 since it took several days to determine the winner. So, what am I doing for prep this year, and what should you b...

Let's Bust Some Voting Myths!
I see the voting misinformation machine is gearing up again. Let's take a look at some of their points:
1. Vote counts should be available the evening of election day. Agreed, but there are some caveats here. Technical issues can happen. The courts can keep some polling stations open late if there are issues that prevent people from voting. (A power outage, perhaps.) What you get isn't the whole picture. But if you go look at your county vote count (it's available where I live star...

The Deed is Done
I'm just back from early voting. We're still voting touch screen here, and the display did confirm all of my votes. I'd be happy with a paper receipt, though. The volunteer told me they'd had over 1200 early voters yesterday. I hear tomorrow (last day for early voting where I live) will be packed.
This year they've changed it up a bit. The first step was to present my registration or other ID to a volunteer. He looked the info up on a computer, and passed my stuff on to the next volunteer...

Still sorta up in the air...
Clinton took the popular vote, but the caucus numbers are still not in.
Still many allegations of irregularities, but more complaints of crowds. But as someone in one article pointed out, last year they had ten people, this year it was hundreds. How do they plan for that?
There was some grumbling about the lines last night, but they did get enough volunteers and paperwork together to add a couple of sign-in stations, which helped. Honestly, I think they were surprised and gra ...

Back from the caucus
For those following along with what's going on in Texas, you may have seen tales of huge voter turnouts today,. This is cool. Voter turnout - at least where I live - has been at downright anemic levels over the last few years. Whatever the outcome, I'm happy to see people participating.
I was doubly happy to see that Chris wanted to go the caucus. We got down there and had to drive around a bit to find a space. Our precint met in the cafeteria, and we joined a line to get in that snak ...

Back from voting
Well, it was just a little too cold for my lungs to handle the walk, so we waited until after school had been out for a while and then Chris drove us down to the polling place. We didn't have much trouble getting a parking space and we walked right in. A teenager was manning a table right inside the door. He looked a bit young to be an election worker, and I was right: He was overseeing a sign-in sheet for the school. Move along, nothing to see here.
We were greeted enthusiastica ...

A cold day in ...
At some point I must have remarked that it would be a cold day in Hell before Texas actually mattered in the primary.
Oops.
Fortunately, the roads here are clear. A heavy turnout is predicted. Chris and I have a cunning plan to walk to the elementary school this afternoon after classes let out. I hope it'll be warm enough to walk. Between construction, school, commuters, and voters, it may be difficult to find a spot, as was evidenced by the e-mail Paul sent me this morning af ...

Yes, there is a downside of having a contested primary in Texas
I just hung up on my third (or was it fourth? I've lost count) political call of the day.
They've all been pre-recorded.
I've made up my mind, but I'm not going to vote until Tuesday.
Leave me alone.
