Today's Amazingly Sweet Deal
A LeatherCult Military Jacket.
I'll be wearing it to the Steampunk On A Budget panel Sunday at Octopodicon. At that point, if you ply me with enough tea, I just might tell you what I paid fo...

My OctopodiCon Schedule
Here's what I'll be doing at OctopodiCon this weekend:
Friday, 3:00, Rudolf Diesel: Steampunk Clothing Construction Steampunk clothing often involves leather and metal bits, ornamental widgets, and paint. Tea Dyeing Experiment Update
This is an update to the previous entry on dyeing fabric with tea and coffee. I brewed up a batch of triple-strength tea and tried soaking for 15 and 30 minutes. Here are the results:
They're darker than the previous batch. The muslin finally took on a little more color. The dark streaks were still in the...

Tea And Coffee Dyeing Experiments
One of my ongoing projects is working with natural dyes. Rather than do trial-end-error on clothing - and to aid my memory - I'm doing some test runs. The other day I bought some white remnants: twill, linen/rayon blend, and muslin. I cut them into 8" squares:

Let's Give a Frock Coat the Steampunk Treatment!
I picked this lovely frock coat up today.
As lovely as Victorian England is for a base for Steampunk outfits, you have to understand something: they were in a bit of a mini ice age. This is Texas, where at present the thermometer on the front porch reads 102.2. You guys know I have a passion for velvet, but this is Texas. In August.

And Here's the Dye Job!
Pardon the fuzzy camera shot. This bustier was a thrifted item. I paid $3 or less for it. It's made from denim and was dyed indigo. The lace was black. I decided I really didn't want indigo, so I went for wine. I think it worked.

This Week's Thrift Store Haul
It seems that there are more Steampunk-type events on the horizon, so I went shopping for more clothes. I hit one of my favorite thrift stores today, figuring that they'd have a lot of new stock out today since the tax-free weekend starts tomorrow. Boy, did I come out good!
Not shown: A white hat box. I haven't decided if I'll actually wear t...

About Those Thrift Store Finds...
Here's the picture I promised in the last journal entry:
The silver candlestick on the left is the antique electroplated silver piece I found. The brass and green one on the right is a 1970s piece that I'm going to Steampunk. The one in the rear is ca. 1968. It wasn't a thrift store find, but had been hanging about in storage for a while. I'm t...

Victorian/Edwardian/Steampunk Resources
This is one of the promised SoonerCon follow-up posts. This is a partial list of resources. I'll break it up into several categories, so if you don't see anything interesting initially, please scroll down. And feel free to leave your favorite resources in the comments
Books
Most of these books are still readily available (though some may have to be purchased used), but I'm going to start off with a couple that you probably won't be able t...

Monday Mumblings Goes Sweeping Down the Plains
Or something like that.
I'm still fairly dead tired, but let's see if I can come up with a reasonable facsimile of a SoonerCon report:
We left earlier than usual Friday in order to get up to hang my stuff early for the Art S...
